With 52 players remaining, there are seven with a shot at catching John Phan in the WPT Player of the Year race. In prior seasons, it has never been this close at the end, so this looks to be the most exciting POY race yet.
Here are the current standings for the players still in contention, starting with current points-leader John Phan. He has already busted, so his total is the mark to tie/beat:
John "The Razor" Phan – 1,400 pts
Freddy Deeb – 1,000 pts
Elky Grospellier – 1,000 pts
David Benyamine – 700 pts
Justin Young – 700 pts
Evan McNiff – 600 pts
Nenad Medic – 500 pts
Mark Seif – 400 pts
Here are the points awarded for this tournament:
1st Place – 1,000 pts
2nd Place – 700 pts
3rd Place – 600 pts
4th Place – 500 pts
5th Place – 400 pts
6th Place – 300 pts
7th Place – 200 pts
Seif will need a victory to tie Phan, while Medic and McNiff will clinch the POY title with a victory here. Benyamin and Young will tie Phan with a 2nd-place finish, and win the title with a victory.
Deeb and Grospellier can tie Phan with a fourth-place finish, and anything higher than that will give them the title outright.
Of course, it’s possible that two or more of these players make the final table, making the calculations a little more interesting at that point. Stay tuned …
