Brandon Mifsud Clashes With Balazs Somodi

With only 43 players remaining you could forgive either Balazs Somodi or Brandon Mifsud for sitting back with their well above average chip stacks, and coasting through to Day 2.

In this hand Zhang Yang opened to 7,000 from under the gun. Mifsud called on the button and Somodi three-bet to 22,000 from the small blind. Yang folded and Mifsud called.

The flop was Diamond 7Heart 10Heart Q and Somodi bet 19,000 and Mifsud called.

Somodi bet 38,000 on the turn which was the Spade 8 and Mifsud raised to 85,000. Somodi called and the river was the Diamond 6.

Somodi checked this time and Mifsud moved all in for 192,000. His opponent went deep into the tanking, alternating between smiling, playing his chips, gurning and smiling at his opponent.

Eventually he folded. Mifsud breathed a sigh of relief and eventually showed X AX 7 saying, “I didn’t think that was going to get through.”

“I almost called!” said Somodi, who said that he folded pocket Kings.

“This game is so fucking good,” said tablemate Robert Soogea as the players returned to their seats following Somodi’s lengthy tank.
