Jim Agate Flops a Set of Eights Against Two Players with Ace High, Agate Eliminated by a Runner-Runner Straight

Jun 28, 2018

Tyler Adams raises UTG+1 to 1,500, another player calls from middle position, and Jim Agate moves all in from the cutoff for 10,500. Agate is in seat 9, and Kamran Dargahi doesn’t see his shove from seat 1, so he throws out two 1K chips from the button to call the original raise.

Since he didn’t see the all-in bet, Dargahi is given the option to call the all in, or to fold and forfeit his 2,000. Dargahi says something like “What the hell” as he tries to move all in, but the dealer reminds him that it will only be a call — he lost the option to raise when he threw out the two 1K chips. So Dargahi calls.

Adams also calls the all in, and the middle-position player folds. Any further betting will create a side pot between Adams and Dargahi.

The flop comes Club QSpade 8Diamond 7, Adams bets 20,000, Dargahi moves all in, and Adams calls. All three players turn over their cards, and here they are in descending order of chip counts:

Tyler Adams:  Heart AClub K  (ace high)
Kamran Dargahi:  Diamond AHeart K  (ace high)
Jim Agate:  Diamond 8Club 8  (set of eights)

Agate is a huge favorite here, as the only way he can lose is if the last two cards are a jack and a ten.

The turn card is — the Heart J.

The river card is — the Diamond 10!

The entire table explodes in shock as Adams and Dargahi catch runner-runner ace-high straights to win the pot and chop it up, eliminate Agate on a horrible bad beat.

Tyler Adams  –  64,000  (128 bb)
Kamran Dargahi  –  36,000  (72 bb)
Jim Agate  –  Eliminated

Between this hand and the earlier one where he folded a flush draw that would have been a huge winner, Agate says he is done for the day, but he plans to return on Saturday to play Day 1G.
