Hollywood Dave and Steve Buckner Have a Battle of Words

Sep 19, 2010

A player limps in middle position and Hollywood Dave Stann raises to 1,400.  Steve Buckner is in the cutoff and makes it 4,400 to go.  The player on the button calls and, after much deliberation, Stann calls as well.

The flop comes down [8d7h5s] and Stann checks.  Buckner instantly moves all-in for around 27,000.  The player on the button hesitates for a moment before folding and Stann goes in the tank.  Stann has around 20,000 chips left, so it would be his tournament life on the line if he called.  After a couple of minutes of thinking, the oration begins:

"You either have it or you have nothing, there is no middle ground," Stann muses.

Buckner offers to show his cards, but Stann is afraid of what he’ll see.

"I’m afraid you’ll show and I’ll hate my life," Stann replies.

"I guarantee you won’t hate your life."

"You’ve seen me make some pretty big laydowns.  Phil Hellmuth could make this laydown, but I don’t know if I can."

At this point, Stann sits up, puts his hand on his stack, and Buckner almost flips his hand over, thinking Stann is about to call.  He stops himself before his cards are revealed and assures Stann it was an honest mistake and not an angle shoot.  It ends not being an issue, as Stann mucks his hand, jokingly suggesting Buckner was trying to execute some sort of clever reverse tell.

Buckner shows his [JdJh] and says, "I was stronger than garlic in a milkshake."

Steve Buckner – 37,500
Dave Stann – 20,000
