The board leaves Goncalves drawing dead and the arduous heads-up battle comes to an end. It took 124 hands to whittle down the field from eight to two, and nearly as many hands were played to eventually crown a champion.
Girard started the final day as the chip leader and remained atop the leaderboard until the heads-up stage, during which Goncalves clawed his way back in with several double-ups.
A cat with many lives: Runner-Up Mathieu Goncalves
Eventually, Girard doubled into a commanding lead and finished the job two hands later to claim the top prize of €170,000. Goncalves has to settle for the runner-up spot and walks away with a consolation prize of €117,120. On top of the cash, Girard also earned a trip to Las Vegas for the 2024 WPT World Championships at Wynn Las Vegas in December as well.
The second edition of WPT Prime at Club Circus Paris generated a prize pool of €1,192,320 (~US $1,285,559), which was split among the top 156 finishers. Seven of the eight finalists hailed from the home nation while Oleksii Ievchenko from the Ukraine bowed out in sixth place.
