The 2017 WPTDeepStacks Big Stax XXĀ event brought tons of talent out to the Philadelphia area. With lots of players traveling in from all over the country, it was a local talent who came out on top.
Jimmy Poper topped a field of 660 entries to win $201,991 after a nearly 16-hour final day. The Pottstown, PA native plays at Parx Casino several times a week and also earned a $3,000 package into the WPTDeepStacks Championship event at Thunder Valley at the end of the year.
Poper showed his chops at the final table after having to navigate a final table that was filled with poker pros. Of the final four players remaining, Poper was forced to navigate through four well-known pros in Phil Hui, Justin Liberto, and runner-up DJ MacKinnon.
As play got short, MacKinnon held most of the chips in play, but Poper was able to win a flip and double through MacKinnon to contend for the chip lead with three players remaining. After MacKinnon eliminated Liberto in third place, it was Poper and MacKinnon heads-up for all the marbles.
They started out even in chips, but Poper got all in preflop with pocket aces against MacKinnon’s pocket fives. MacKinnon turned a five, but Poper rivered an ace to make a bigger set and put himself firmly in control of the heads-up match.
Poper finished him off shortly after and secured the title.
