Photo Recap: Day 4 of the WPT Legends of Poker

Day 4 of WPT Legends of Poker was relatively quick, playing down from 15 players to six in a little less than five hours. Two-time WPT winner Jonathan Little busted in 12th place, running into bad luck and runner-runner flushes.

Here are the official chip counts for the final six, who are headed to tomorrow’s televised WPT Final Table, scheduled to start here at the Bicycle Casino at 4:00 pm PT:

The unfortunate seventhbok award goes to Steve Reitzfeld, who earned $45,000 for his seventh-place finish, but just missed the TV final table.

Steve Reitzfeld takes his seat a few minutes before play begins, about to restack his chips. As pointed out above, Reitzfeld would bust out on the TV bubble in seventh place.

Day 4 begins with 15 players at the final two tables.

Kyle Wilson (right) studies John Smith in a battle of the blinds during the first 15 minutes of play. The board shows [Jd8h5sAs3s], and Smith check-called each street before betting out on the river. Wilson would raise, and Smith would call with pocket jacks. Wilson would turn over [4d2c] to win the pot with a five-high straight — an omen of good things to come for Wilson on Day 4.

 
Two hands later, Schiffer got Tom Lee to commit all in preflop with [AcQd] against Schiffer’s [QhQs]. But the board came [Ad10s5hAs6c], and Lee won the pot with trip aces to double up. Two bad beats in a row knocked Schiffer down to just 14 big blinds, and he would bust out a short while later in a three-way pot against Tom Lee and Hoan Ly (pictured above). Lee got the death blow, this time with [AsJs].
These two bad beats changed the course of the tournament, because while Schiffer busted in 15th place (earning $19,500), both of the players who sucked out on him (Jaffee and Lee) would go on to make the televised WPT Final Table.

The other contender for Worst Luck of the Day is two-time WPT winner Jonathan Little, who twice ran into runner-runner flushes against Andy Frankenberger. The second time was the last, as Frankenberger moved all in on the river with the board showing [Js6h2d7s10s].

While he was pondering the call, Little told the table that he didn’t like the last card. But he called anyway. Frankenberger showed [8s6s] to win the pot with a spade flush, and Jonathan Little mucked as he was out of the tournament in 12th place, earning $24,000.

Andy Frankenberger was in the big blind and still stacking chips after busting Jonathan Little when Tyler Cornell moved all in. Frankenberger looked at his cards, and insta-called with [AcAh]. Cornell’s [As8h] was dominated, and five cards later, he was out of the tournament in 11th place. With ten players left, Frankenberger had more than a 2.5-to-1 chip lead over everyone else.

With 10 players left, they consolidated to a single table. It would only take 49 hands to reach the final six.

With nine players left, and the board showing [Jh9h7hQh] on the turn, Kyle Wilson (center) check-raised all in, and Andy Frankenberger (foreground, right) called with [3c3h] for a low flush. But Wilson turned over [AcAh] to win the pot with an ace-high flush and double up in chips. Frankenberger was still chipleader with 3 million (187 bb), but Wilson was catching up with 2.3 million (143 bb).

The final seven players fight for six seats at the televised WPT Final Table. Those who fell short include Hoan Ly (10th place), John Smith (9th), and Wade Woelfel (8th).

In the second-to-last hand of the day, Kyle Wilson (left) and Andy Frankenberger (right) battled once again. Wilson raised from the cutoff, and Frankenberger called from the big blind, and they both checked to the turn on a board of [Jc5d4h7h]. Frankenberger bet, and Wilson called. The river card paired the board with the [Jh], and Frankenberger check-called a bluff from Wilson, who said he had queen high. Frankenberger won the pot with [9h7s] (two pair, jacks and sevens).

In the final hand, three players saw a flop of [5s4h3d]. Steve Reitzfeld moved all in for 13 big blinds, and Tom Lee (left) called with [9c9d]. Reitzfeld had [As7s], and would need an ace or a runner-runner miracle to stay alive. The [3s] on the turn gave Reitzfeld a flush draw, but he missed when the [Jd] fell on the river. Reitzfeld was out in seventh place, while Tom Lee moved up near the top of the chip counts.

Tom Braband fills out his WPT bio sheet after reaching the final six who will play at Wednesday’s televised WPT Final Table. Two of his opponents have made the final table here at WPT Legends of Poker in the past — Kyle Wilson finished sixth here in 2008, and Tom Lee finished sixth in 2004. Jared Jaffee also has WPT experience, finishing fourth at the WPT Southern Poker Championship in Biloxi earlier this year.
