Among the Day 2 field is Englishman Andrew Field, who travelled to Deauville not just to play the Main Event, but to play the PMU.fr WPTDeepStacks Opener event which kicked off the festival on Wednesday.
“I got up at like 7 a.m. to travel here. I got to the hotel and had a bite to eat, and by the time I got to the tournament room the Opener had started 45 minutes ago.
“I like tournaments with around 100 players or maybe slightly less than that. They’re better. You just feel like you have a better chance of winning.
That’s not to say that he doesn’t like the big events, explains Hills, who has a top five stack at the start of Day 2 of the Main Event – not bad for his first ever tournament in France.
“I’ve been to France before, but never played poker here. I used to play poker online, but recently I’ve made a point of travelling around Europe and looking online for what’s coming up and what tournaments to play.
“I’ve got some small personal targets that I want to hit before the end of the year; number of cashes and things like that. This is my best ever year playing live poker. I don’t really like going to the big stops, so while everyone else was going to the Czech Republic, I thought this would be a good one for me to go to!”
