The World Poker Tour is introducing live poker series format during its 20th anniversary celebration year and the first ever WPT Prime Main Event is set to get underway shortly at the Crown Poker Club in Ha Noi, Vietnam. It replaces the popular WPTDeepStacks brand all over the world and delivers the same deep tournament structure at an affordable mid-stakes buy-in.
Throughout the last few years, the WPT has certainly ramped up the activities in the region with stops in several Asian countries and it is not the first appearance in Vietnam. Back in 2014, the WPT headed to Vietnam for the first time and the WPT Dragon Series Vietnam took place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Danang. This was followed by three editions of the WPTDeepStacks Vietnam at the Pro Poker Club in Ho Chi Minh City in 2018 and 2019.
After the world wide hiatus of live poker action subsided in 2021, the WPTDeepStacks Hanoi debuted at the Crown Poker Club and Van Phinh Nguyen topped a field of 378 entries in which the guaranteed prize pool of VND 4 billion was nearly doubled. In a four-way deal, Nguyen earned VND 842 million ($36,551) for the efforts while eventual runner-up Duy Ho received the largest payday of VND 1.012 billion ($43,931).
It is expected that this attendance will be toppled by a significant margin. So far, the series has already produced strong numbers in all side events and the flagship tournament awaits as of 11 a.m. local time on Thursday, May 26, 2022.
The inaugural WPT Prime Vietnam Main Event comes with a VND 8 billion guarantee and features a buy-in of VND 25 million (∼ $1,088) with a total of three starting days. All players receive 30,000 in chips and the level duration on Day 1 is set to 40 minutes each with a late registration until the start of level seven after approximately four and a half hours of poker action. Until then, unlimited re-entries are allowed and all three starting flights will play down to the money as 12.5% of the field will advance (one out of eight players).
All those making it through to Day 2 will have locked up a cash prize and the action then recommences on Sunday, May 29, 2022 on which the marquee event plays all the way down to the nine-handed final table. The WPT Prime Vietnam Main Event is also eligible for the WPT Player of the Year ranking as well. Furthermore, all those cashing in tournaments during the stop at Crown Poker Club will also earn points towards the Player of the Festival ranking as well.
The WPT live reporting team will be in Ha Noi to provide updates from start to finish in the marquee Main Event, which also includes a live-streamed final table on May 30, 2022.
